New York, N.Y. — High school senior Abdon Ocampo once told a friend he would "give everything" to make his girlfriend happy.
Early Monday, the popular 18-year-old tried rappelling from the roof of a 13-story apartment building in Manhattan to his girlfriend’s window two floors below.
The romantic pre-dawn stunt cost him his life.
The thin cord Ocampo was using to reach Nicole Simaan’s room snapped, police said, and he fell into a bed of ivy near the building’s entrance. Ocampo, who lived in the same development, died of massive injuries, the medical examiner’s office said.
"He really loved her. One time he told me he’d give everything to make her happy," said Roderick Abad, 17, who called Ocampo his best friend. "He just wanted to be sweet, and do some Indiana Jones type of thing."
Although Abad said he did not know if his friend, whom everyone called Don, had ever lowered himself to Simaan’s window before, He said Ocampo probably wanted to do something adventurous to impress her.
The accident occurred after Ocampo tied the cord, which is typically used to tie newspaper bundles, to a drainpipe on the roof of the building and started down, said police spokesperson Joseph McConville. But the cord snapped.
"He was determined to get into the girlfriend’s apartment," McConville said. "The girlfriend was home, but the parents didn’t want the girl to see him."
Police said Simaan was home, and they believe the window of her 11th-floor bedroom was left open so Ocampo could gain easy access. Simaan and her family would not comment about the tragedy.
