Initially, but Judea was invaded by other Empires that aren't Italian. It's a biased Protestant opinion.

Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible: the desolation made there should continue until the consummation of God's wrath and vengeance upon them; until the whole he has determined is poured out on this desolate people; and which continues unto this day, and will till the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled, Luke 21:24.

This sounds about right, but the desolation is not exclusive to the Jews, but also includes ingrafted Christians. Communion seems rather useless in lieu of all that. It's not that hard to remember Conceptually.

Furthermore, even if a 3rd Jewish Temple were to be built, Paul seems to suggest everybody would still die once and then immediately be judged by God. Eternal Life is Better than a Building. If It's Bread and Grapes you want, just be sure everybody is nourished on the Sabbath.

Some Jews really want the Priestly Duties and Sacrificial System to continue. Some Christians want them to build the 3rd Temple to usher in the Antichrist. It all seems rather silly, considering the structure atop the Temple Mount could all ready be the fourth one up there, if you include what the Romans erected soon after the 2nd Temple's destruction. Buddhists understand the Sacrificial System the Jews long for. There is an Old Lady in Safed who abhors Elaborate Ceremonies. She pities the British Royals for that reason.

In a way, though, each person all ready makes a Grain Offering and Sacrifice, when they eat a Sandwich and drink Grape Juice. Furthermore, John's text says he saw no temple because Christ is the Temple in our midst. The question could be where exactly is He positioned within Humanity. He could be Gaming in a Batcave Somewhere in Antarctica enjoying His Fortress of Solitude for all we know.

I'm wondering, from a Microscopic standpoint, what would happen if I didn't continue to eat Bread and Grapes, like I did with Dad for 3 and 1/2 years. You have to understand that eating a Sandwich and drinking Grape Juice on a daily basis is a Great Privilege and Responsibility. Beyond the Mundane, Bread and Grapes are a Priestly Duty to maintain. The Jews have not been able to make Offerings and Sacrifices, since Christ was crucified.

Either the Mountain located in East Jerusalem is emptied of any Manmade Evidence or an Abominable Structure continues to make Humanity desolate. Removing Buildings from the Temple Mount is not easy. There have been attempts to bomb the Temple Mount. I posit, a Nuclear Iran may play an integral role in transforming the Mountain sans any Religiousity. It should just be a Mountain with Wild Flowers and Vines.
